Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi all

HELP!

Has anyone experienced a similar issue with file operations in MMEdit (win 10)?
(Please don't tell me to ditch Windows!)

Currently running the latest version (3.7.5) which WAS working perfectly. I had occasion to uninstall / reinstall, after which any attempt to access the file system (open or save) results in this error - "Error 0 String can't hold String".

Have tried all the usuals - reboot, reinstall, install earlier version (3.7.0 & 3.6), stood on my head for 10mins, etc. etc. - still the same issue.

I can paste from notepad into MMEdit & use it normally, just can't save (but saving syntax changes works - currently using Maximite_V4.5). So, I have to re-paste back into Notepad to save.

All other Windows file operations in other programs work fine, it's only MMEdit! (Jim I think Bill heard you swearing at him...).

Obviously I have done something wrong somewhere, but all I did was uninstall / reinstall MMEdit!

Too many bruises from head-banging now - any thoughts or ideas will be extremely welcome...

Cheers

I suspect a corrupted configuration file.
Uninstall then delete the data folder.
In my case it is in:
Data folder: C:\Users\Jim\AppData\Local\CCom\MMedit

Thanx Jim - I had already been there - no change. I'll go through the motions again though.

If the program starts, it has already read a number of files so it can open some files.
Perhaps your AV is not happy with something.

Done again Jim - uninstalled, deleted Ccom from appdata folder, reinstalled version 3.7.0. Same issue.

In that case I guess that it doesn't like one of the initial settings.

Can you post a copy of the configuration report. (or send it via PM if you prefer.

You're lucky it's too hot here to work outside today.

Just a thought,I have had a similar problem with some midi music software.

I solved it by running it as administrator. Works OK now.

Problem fixed!

Jim has nailed the issue (PM sent Jim) & all is now working. It seems MMEdit didn't like using a network path.

My NAS drive was in fact already mapped to drive Y: but Windows returns the network path, not the drive letter, when asked (my documents path is changed to the NAS, not local).

What must have happened with the reinstall was that we got the network path, not the original drive mapping. What fixes it is to change the entries in locate.inf to use the drive letter & magic! - it now works.

Thanks all for your help.

Cheers

To give a little more information.

It is a 'feature' of Liberty Basic.

MMEdit can use network paths but the 'file save' dialog doesn't like network paths as the default/starting directory.

During installation, when MMEdit asked Windows where the MyDocuments folder was, Windows gave a network path so all attempts to open or save failed miserably.

I will trap a MyDocuments network drive problem in the next update.

Brian,
Could you run the attached program and sent me the results.
I am curious to see what Windows returns for the various folders on your system
The results get copied to the clipboard.
2019-01-23_150648_folders.zip

My results are:
APPDATA C:\Users\Jim\AppData\Roaming\
PROFILE C:\Users\Jim\
PERSONAL C:\Users\Jim\Documents\

I am looking for a default for when the Documents folder fails.
