Sorry, this is not really a PC or Micro-controller thread....

38'C in the sun today, and still 30'C now the sun has set and it is almost dark.
The temp will now fall quickly, but what a day.
God bless A/C, but I only have a couple of rooms that have heat-pumps in them.
This is one of them, but going from about 20'C into 30'C or so when I go through a door is an amazing thing.

How the hell do you guys in Australia cope with this kind of heat?
I do note in the news that some parts of Australia are now roasting in almost 50'C temperatures.....
A/C sales must be good in Aussie.

Please, power-grid - don't fail me now. Trying to also cool myself down with a few pints of home-brew. I never really liked home-brew that much, but tonight - bloody hell....anything that's cold....

If you had listened to us and had your ice water bath ready to calibrate your thermometers, you could use that.

A dash of whisky to add a bit of flavour and no more worries about the heat.

Jim, where we had a maximum of 21 today but the fire sill burn.

@Grogster
You seem to be having a lot of problems with temperature recently. My solution is to head to the local pool and from there to the local watering hole. Just for reference my A/C has been running every day now for about three weeks. I live about 2 hours west of Brisbane and have not seen rain here for a while although @Palcal up north has been copping heaps. Temps here have been hovering around mid 30s for weeks and according to this weeks forecast there is no relief in sight. Like you I hope the power grid can cope.

Hey, has the Tesla system-level UPS come into play, or is it in a different part of the country?

But I don't know where Busa is (Ok, west of Brisbane), or whether the heat wave extends to South Australia.Edited by lizby 2019-02-12

Hi @lizby
The Tesla batteries are in the south of the country (South Australia) and I am situated in Queensland which is in the north of the country. I think the temps in SA today are around the mid twenties so quite pleasant there. The Tesla batteries were installed in SA after a huge storm there virtually left the state in darkness a couple of years ago. Since then I believe the batteries have coped well although they haven't really been tested as yet.
Like the US we have extremes of weather from one end of the country to the other but everywhere in Oz seems to be suffering from the heat this year

G'Day All

We live just North of Adelaide South Australia. A couple of weeks ago we set a new record of 47.5. It was hot.
The story with the Tesla battery was that it would supply a few houses for a few minutes which seemed a bit pointless but apparently it works very well by supplying power while other systems are fired up meaning that they are not running most of the time.
I think that's the idea.
Anyway our power survived the last heat wave and my generator gets run once a month only.
On the day it was 47.5 our house was at 25. We had to go outside to get warm.
And yes, the weather today is perfect.

The big Tesla battery bank in SA has been working better than expected, and is expected to pay for itself much earlier than planned. Google "sa tesla battery report", lots of interesting reports on its performance.

Where I live now I get to 41c in summer, and -6c in winter. I actually prefer the summer, as the winter frosts kill everything I try to grow. The fact we are in drought here, and only had 5mm rain so far this year doesn't help, I miss the rain and green of my home town up in the tropics. Mind you, they just had over 1500mm or rain up there in the last couple of weeks!

I read the human body adapts to hot climates quicker than cold climates. A few years ago I visited some family in Tasmania, in winter. Never felt so cold, and incapacitated! Couldn't move, fingers didn't work, toes and ears hurt, and I remember thinking, how do people live here!

I turn on the air conditioning once the temp in my office reaches 30c, and its set to 26c, which I find comfortable and doesn't use too much power. I'm off grid so the power is almost free, but the inverter and charge controller are in the shed where it gets to 45c on a hot day, so I keep the load down to help them survive the heat. Only the office is air conditioned, the rest of the house goes up to 37 on a hot day, even the water from the cold tap is to warm to drink, unless you let it run for a minute.

If I have to work on something in the shed when its over 40c, I find its not to bad if you have a breeze or a fan you can move to where you are working. The trick is to let the sweat flow and drinks lots of water. The human body can function perfectly well in 50c heat, provided you keep the fluids up and can circulate the air.

A little cooler today 37'C in the shade. Not sure the home-brew helped the situation.
It is cloudy, which helps prevent it being another roasting day, but I expect it will get very hot again if the cloud goes away.

Bear in mind, for us over here in Kiwi land, 20'C or so is considered warm.

It really does get down to what ever you are used to. I think TassyJim complained about 30 recently.
The main thing, particularly for we oldies, is that very hot days can kill.

Snow, glorious snow.....

Hovered about 35'C for most of the day, but now it is down to about 22'C which is much better.

Growing up on a farm in Utah we saw summer time temps from 37C to 45C.

We had root cellars under the sheds and barn. The 40 goats went under the barn.
The 3600 rabbits had a swamp cooling system made of burlap and straw. And the
chickens has misters. We'd do our chores from 3AM to 6AM then play till it
was too hot. Spent the next few hours in the roots cellars sorting and tending
to the mushrooms. There was no A/C any where for miles. Weekends at the matinee.
25 cents for the ticket, 5 cent for candy bar, 3 cents popcorn, 5 cents for soda.

I thought was a very good life but my siblings didn't.
For me the summers were find but the cold was bad.

Now there are a few hundred houses and shops there in stead of the 20 farms.

A few years back before my Dad passed we sat at a small park and he asked me
if I knew where we where. I said about 500 feet from the main rabbit hutch.
He laughed and said out of all the family I was the only one to know that.
I told him it was the church steeple off to the southeast that was my reference.

There is a place in Australia called Cooper Pedy where they mine opals. Many of the residents live underground, its cooler, like your cellars. They even have underground shops.

@Gizmo

You'd be enjoying the nice & "warm" westerlies at the moment. Be over 40deg at your place, wouldn't it?

Weatherzone says it's 35.6deg in Toowoomba but feels like 30.8deg. Go figure!! Like a blast furnace outside

Forecast max was 39, but its already 38.9 outside in the shade here at lunch time. I expect it will hit 40. The heat is ok, its the wind and extreme fire weather warnings that worry me. Most of my water tanks are full, I ran the bore pump overnight to top them up. I've got about 40,000 litres stored, and my place is surrounded by overgrazed grassland so fire isnt a big risk for me, but it still makes me nervous

Turned on the air con a few minutes ago, inside the house just went past 34.

Cooling of a bit now. Well....

I still wouldn't like a grass fire anywhere in this weather.

Our AC's went on much earlier. SWMBO reckoned it was getting hot.

Better weather coming your way Grogster.
We had the AC on heat last night and again this morning.
Snow visible on the hills to the south.

Still not enough to put about 40 bush fires out.

@Jim

Got a SIL (Sister-in-Law) living not far from you. She seems to have her fire going most of the year.
