For those of us who were largely brought up on a C64 (though I go back to the original PET) there is a very interesting video on YouTube about the history of Commodore given by the engineer in charge of the project. Apparently the C64 was, & still has, the credos of being largest selling computer model in history, way outpacing Apple, IBM etc. - 27 million units sold. He goes right in to the nuts & bolts of the design & manufacture of all the Commodore model releases, including the fights with management over what should, could & could not be done. he likens the history of Commodore as a "Greek tragedy in 3 acts", the final act being when Management & Marketing overrode the boys on the technical side & in doing so rather fast-tracked the demise of the company. There's also a series on the individual models given by the 8bit Guy - well worth watching in that learning how they managed to cram so much into the so little memory of the day might help us with our own Basic programming! Talk by Bil (that's how he spells it) Herd (the engineer) here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Zpv6u5vCJ4 The first of the 8bit Guy series here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP9y_7it3ZM Oh! dejavu... The C64 was the fourth computer I actually owned (zx80, Vic20, Microbee 16 and C64)... After the 1k ram of the zx80, and the 3 1.2k ram of the vic, the C64 felt huge (even if not all of it was available 48k from memory) And yet we could actually do things with them quite successfully, I learned to program eproms for the vic, and made interface boards to run a model railway, and later it became my lightchaser for band lighting and sound work |
