I removed the black potting from my toroid. It took me several hours. Trying to fiqure out how to unwind it. Its 144lbs and I can hardly lift it. I was thinking about hanging it from the rafters in my garage.

For testing the toroid I connect live to red and neutral to one of the black wires?

The two red wires are 240v.

Make sure you have a lightbulb with a switch across it has to be old type filament light bulb

Not sure about the wires I would have to see the Transformer and the wires coming out of it

123V on the 240V winding gave 46.7V on the 90V winding with 17W idle
and with 27 additional turns on the 90V winding I got 97V out and 17W idle
123V on the 90V winding with the 27 extra turns gave 156V out with 29W idle

Let me see if I understand your test setup:

So, 97 - 46.7 = 50.3V across the 27 turns (please confirm)

Assuming the above is correct, for 17W idle, your turns per volt = 27/50.3 = 0.536 or volts per turn = 50.3/27 = 1.863

The 90V winding can be assumed to have 46.7 x 0.536 = 25 turns
The 240V winding can be assumed to have 123 x 0.536 = 66 turns

I don't know what the ideal idle wattage is for the core size you have. Maybe the 29W idle is acceptable.

If you go for 17W idle and just want a single 120V output, you don't have to touch the 240V winding, just use it as the 120V secondary output of your inverter (assuming the 240v winding is the one adjacent to the core). But you might not want to do this because you will have more copper loss and lower wattage capability.

I don't know if the wire size for the primary will fit in the remaining space to still get 10KW.

I think this still needs further study to get dual 120V output, low idle power, and 10KW capable.Edited by tinyt 2019-07-25

A lot of these guys on here run grid ties during the day along with their inverters Madness being one of them if you have any questions

I don't think we have a second hand market for these grid ties here in the United States I could be wrong though

So that big Transformer might be just as exactly what you need

I know I drooled over that Transformer for over a year no one would respond to me

I started to unwind the outermost winding
There are 5 strands of 4.6mm diameter enamled copper for each turn. I'm not sure how I am going to manage to rewind using this wire. I was thinking about maybe using this core and getting some more cores to make a warpInverter because they seem better.

The 5 4.6mm wires are connected together and then connect to a 1 AWG wire. If the cross sectiontial area of the 5 4.6mm wires is (16.8mm2 * 5) 84mm2 why do the 5 4.6mm wires connect to a 1 AWG wire with a cross sectional area of only 42.4mm2 ?

The problem is heat and temperature rise.

A single wire can run at a much higher current density because it is surrounded by air and has better cooling.

If you wrap the same wire around to form a solid transformer winding with many turns, the heat cannot get out, and the whole thing gets very hot.

So you need to reduce the current rating, or use thicker wire inside a transformer than the wires coming out of the transformer.

I removed the 90V winding on the outside. Do I need to mess with the 240v winding to get 120v split phase?

If not then probably not

Warp speed is awesome when it comes to Transformers (or anything else) if that Transformer ain't exactly what you want


I would get with him and Rewind it the way you want it

This may be something you're using for the next 20 years
make it right exactly the way you want it the first time but that's my opinion anyway

It's a lot of work to wind a Transformer but I do it and have done a bunch of them and your skill level is quite a bit beyond mine

Or I'll just trade you a 52-pound 5000 watt 1 that's a factory Transformer LOL

Amber winds most of our Transformers

That thing should be really easy to totally rewind there shouldn't be very many terms at all like there would be on a small one it should be cake besides it just been so heavy

It looks like you will have to strip off the secondary and start from scratch with a bare core.
Then you can rewind it to have a far lower idling current, and fit two 110v secondaries.
