Well, the day has come, and it would appear to be Friday the 8th of August 2019. I am now totally off Windoze and running my new dual-screen Linux Mint box. I'm loving it so far. Here is a screen-shot of my current arrangement: ![]() Note that this is running the Linux host and the XP Virtual Machine aswell, with Sprint Layout PCB CAD running in the XP VM, along with Opera web-browser, and all this is only sucking 2.3GB of RAM - amazing. Just running Windoze 10, Opera and Sprint Layout, the RAM was often about 9GB and CPU usage about 80% when idle. Note that the idle CPU under Linux is only about 18% or so. This is REALLY good, and I need to restate, that I only have 4GB of RAM on this machine.... Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

@Grogster, You are using Sprint Layout ? Running MicroXP in VM? Any licensing involved ? VM ? MicroXP ? Sprint Layout ? I used Sprint Layout 5.0, but that does not have schematic entry. You can only place pads and traces. Not netlist.... Volhout Edited 2019-08-09 17:46 by Volhout PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

@ PeterB - Thanks!!!! ![]() ![]() @ Volhout - No, the XP SP3 VM(virtual machine) is running XP SP3, but with all the crap stripped out of it, so it is sleek and just does what you want instead of what Microsoft want. ![]() Basically, anyone with an XP SP3 CD and nLITE can do the same. As to Sprint Layout, it is a Windoze-only application that HAS to run inside Windoze, and was unreliable under Linux and WINE, so I installed it as a normal Windoze application inside an XP Virtual Machine, with Linux Mint being the host OS. "Micro XP CAD" means an nLite'd version of XP SP3, that is running only my Windoze-only CAD softwares. This is the name I gave to the Virtual Box VM machine running under the host OS. Nice one Grogs. I have long toyed with the idea of doing just this but it is driver fear that keeps me on Win7 (I know it is moribund but Win10 can suck a fat one) I thought about using P2V to image my current machine and get that working on my local VDC, but I probably need a couple of days run-up to it and it is one of those jobs that just keeps receedingbecause of the size of the task. Thing is, my Win7 machine is really comfortable... just got everything I use and it is just ready for any task. Changing permanently I think would involve quite a bit of pain. I should really revisit this as I don't like the attitude of MS nor the vulnerability. With VMWare, you can set i so that the machine is restored from an image at each boot. So long as you store your work "off VM" it goes back to its initial state each time it starts which makes it virus immune. This has much appeal. Well done on this brave leap. keep us all informed how it goes. |

As someone who has now taken the leap, let me say: "Fear not the Linux." Linux has a TOTALLY different way of thinking about things, though. The point-and-click mouse bit is about the only thing in common with Windoze. Having said that, I am actually enjoying this. I fully expect to fall over with things I thought I could do in Windoze, but I can't THE SAME WAY in Linux, so I will be learning along with everyone else on Windoze reading this considering the move. Is it worth the move? Yes. Coming from a Windoze user for more then 25 years. This one is my first MAIN Linux system. Linux did not used to be so user-friendly, but Linux Mint is EXCELLENT in this regard. I had no real major problem getting anything to work in Mint, and when I did have any issue, the Mint Forums or Mr. Google solved it for me. Keep watching the forums. Anything I do with my new system will have the LINUX pretext in the thread title. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |
