Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Yeah, I imagine so. Opto is now owned by Cognex, and we had the rep out here to demo his scanners and PLC recently. He said that they still sell the ancient Opto-22 stuff.

Now why would anyone buy it when you can get SS relays that do the same thing for less is anyone's guess.

A heck of a lot of industry runs on those Opto-22 relays (or equivalent.) I was just in a factory last Friday tracking down why the product eject system wasn't actually ejecting anything. That included unscrewing these very same relays from the backplane and swapping them around to ensure the relays were not at fault. The fact that they are socketed makes service very much easier.

We had them at my old plant (Saturn) by the thousands. They were used in the HVAC systems, and were controlled by an embedded controller that ran Forth of all things.

That system was virtually unmaintainable.

Goodman also had a few on their Helium leak tester, and I've come across them here and there every once in awhile. But mostly it is either GE or AB PLCs that I work on.

And generally PLCs are far more expensive, but troubleshooting them is usually rather simple. But if the I/O is documented properly, then I suppose that it makes things easier. Still, I don't envy you. :)

And it's not the Optos that are the problem, it's the embedded controller that you can't diagnose that's the problem.

I've got a simple interface board for battery chargers that I have to design that will include SS relays. The board is simple enough (one input and one output and no smarts) that it would be cheaper to toss the board rather than to swap parts. I'll probably go with surface mount relays and be done with it.
