Hi all.

I'm looking for a good AV for Windoze 10 machines.
AVG is my normal go-to, but I would like other opinions.
IDEALLY a combined AV and anti-malware package would be nice.

Happy to pay for it, if it is good at what it does.

Not too keen on Norton, as it has always been a huge resource hog, so I would prefer to avoid that one please.

Suggestions or recommendations?

Just use the built-in anti-virus and add Malwarebytes

Oh yeah, I forgot that W10 has a built-in AV.
Is it as good as any other?

I looked and it updated today, and scanned yesterday with nothing to report.
I remember now that I have read some posts on the web how some people say the built-in AV is crap.
Is there any truth to that?

I run multiple computers in the above configuration and have never seen a virus but how do you test a negative?

In general I think "viruses" are old hat. The real risks are malware and Malwarebytes seems about as good as it gets

Acknowledged.

How are you over there on the 'Other' virus?
All safe and well I hope?

I asked this same question about 9 months ago and matherp gave me the same answer.
I have 3 machines running Win10 and have never had a problem, and saving a lot of $$$

For many years I used AVG, Malwarebytes and Ccleaner on a couple of Win 7 machines but eventually AVG and Malwarebytes got to be incompatible so I got rid of AVG.
Using Ccleaner and Malwarebytes together seems to work but I have no idea what is going on inside.
Grogster, I thought you had gone over to LINUX.

I've been using Trend Micro for years.
Works for me. Never had a problem.

I have, but I still need to use Windoze on other PC's(for now), and 99% of my clients use W10, so I have to be up with the play, so to speak....

I am so out of date. The machine I have is 13 years old.  I haven't reloaded it even in about 6 years. I put an SSD as the main drive and it's worked well. I forget what the machine is now but I remember it is a dual quad core on a server type board with an amount of ram people thought I was nuts to put in when I built it.

It was a dual quad core with 32 Gb of ram on each CORE with a set of backup ram for each of those.  The thing was given to me when it was about 5 yo and was worth over $60K new.  It literally took 5 Min to boot up and the noise of the fans got it the nick name of " Tumanski" after the Russian plane engines. Each power supply, 3 of them, would pull more power than a standard outlet was rated for. luckily that was at max power and it would run on just one supply.
It was still a very effective heater in winter and not fun in summer.

So long since I built computers and I have long since lost interest in building and mucking round with them.

Only AV I am running is a MCaffe version that came with something. I might have cracked it into a full version, can't remember.  All I know is it comes up when I reboot the machine about once a fortnight and I haven't had any problems.
I have had a Few AV's and some are more insidious than a virus themselves. They slow things down and are impossible to shut off or get rid of.

This one is basic but seems low Drag and interference and has kept the nasties away.

I fully believe that has more to do with the sites you co on than anything.
I was always reloading my Kids computers when they got Pox on them or the things just filled up with crap that bogged them down. Friends computers kids used were the same. I'd do mine every few years or so but other peoples were useless in 3-6 Months.

Not just viruses but more advertising and other crap that loaded itself up all the time and suched all the resources in the machine completely dry.

I seem to recall that this has been discussed before.

I started using Windows 10 pretty much as soon as it was available. I was using Trend on my previous machines and was completely happy with it but after hearing that Windows own Defender was quite OK Ihave used it ever since. There have been no problems, it seems to work well and its FREE!

I do run CCleaner (free) now and then to tidy things up a bit and very occasionally run Malwarebytes and I back up every weekend. Adblock is very handy but some sites including this one don't like it but that's easy to manage.

I'm still using the original Classic Shell with no problems so I believe that the conspiracy theory about Microsoft working against it are unfounded - I suspect that other programs interfere with it.

I have heard that AVG is likely to be incompatible with some programs and cause problems so I will not use it.

Can't help you with Windows....

I run linux (Lubuntu 16.04 and 18.04) and for more serious applications a MAC.

The MAC doens't have any virus and malware software, and it is online only when I use it. It is 9 years old, and only received it's MAC OS updates.

The linux machines get their (security) updates when available.

I turn all computers OFF when I don't use them, in the assumption that statistically the chance of being attacked is smaller when access to the computer is off(line) more.

Appart from that I try to limit the amount of sensitive data on all computers.

But I must say that it becomes more and more difficult to recognise phishing. Some mails look very realistic. Last month one from a bank, so convincing my wife almost took it serious, until I reminded her it was a mail from a bank that we did not even have an account with..;)...duh.
