I need a hardcopy of the programing resources that is spiral-bound, relatively compact, and can easly be modified(PAGES) because of the fluid nature of the project at this time. What have any of you been dong? I miss the old C64 documents.  I do not have a duplex printer so It would be a bear to do both sides of the paper but that is what I want. Any ideas?

I sent mine to doxdirect.com/  (UK) £5 for spiral bound A5 -- almost exactly the same as my old ZX81 & Spectrum manuals -- they make me feel happy (trying not to be to nerdy)

Not tried this myself but ...

Acrobat Reader, 2 pages per sheet

and a ringbinder

should cut down on paper usage, and if printed one-sided you can scribble notes on the blank pages.

I believe here in the US that FedEx Office (aka Kinko's) will do this type of thing. I haven't checked into the co$t.

Update:  Yikes, looks like they want $65USD for full color with spiral binding.  B&W brings it down to $22USD but still quite steep!

Hi Mclout,

I usually print my manuals on my canon printer in double sided then laminate them..

I bought a plastic spiral binding machine many moons ago and simply bind my own..

I havent yet done the CMM2 because as you say it is still a work in progress.

Cheap canon printers are out there that will do duplex print (I know you can get them for about $39AU over here

Kind Regards

yes, lay-flat beats on-screen everyday. I have a (I think Oki) dot matrix printer that I use when debugging is getting difficult. print out the offending listing, lay it on the floor and suspend myself over it on a stool. It is great to have the whole listing viewable in a form that I can write on and stuff. Old habits I guess - been doing it 40 years! It's just reams of MMBasic and PIC Assembler not Z80 or VB any more. Ah! music-rule fan-fold ... and a solitary tear rolls down my cheek

Are those cannon printers inkjet?  If so I find them expensive on the consumables.  They sell you the printer at a lose because they get you on the INK big time. I buy third party toner cartridges for nothing.  I get about 2000 pages for abut $20  I did find a setting on my HP lazer jet that does it manually in the driver.  You have to do them in batches of about 20 and then move them from the output to the input tray and it works just fine. I have ordered a Smead PressGuard Report Cover that seems like an OK solution that is much slimmer than a 3 ring binder. It is not a perfect solution but will do and is cheap. I wish I had that binding machine but I am guessing it would be prohibitively expensive for somthing like that now.  Does it do the wire or the wide plastic binders?  I have seen both and like the wire ones.  Thanks for the input.

I really haven't looked into inkjets in a long time so maybe I will if I can find those deals on ink.  I have a cannon all in one a customer gave me I just dug out of storage. I printed the logo for the frount of my CMM2 on it after reading another thread. I am going to look for some cheap carts for it.  I would be nice to have some color some times.

Start rant...

Aagh, the ink issue.

Beware the hidden gotcha with the cheap inks. Some manufacturers (Canon included) have in the past been guilty of loading a time bomb into their printers, in that with the "genuine" inks there is an extra "anti-clogging" ingredient that prevents the print head becoming clogged up & unusable (this is only relevant for the printers that have a fixed print head).

The cheap generic inks generally don't have this secret ingredient & eventually the print head becomes clogged, unusable & more expensive than a new printer to replace. I have past experience here...

Although our modern regulatory environment hopefully now prevents this behavior...

Anyway, I guess it's a trade-off between what you save on cheap ink versus a new printer - as mentioned new printers are dirt cheap

I never use or recommended using generic ink while the printer is still in warranty - you will note that the warranty specifically excludes the use of non-genuine ink. (how do they know??)

Rant over...

Cheers all

Brian

Hi Brian, All,,

I NEVER use genuine ink (If generic are available) after the enclosed ones run out..  The ink costs as much as a new printer..

For instance I have 2 Canon ink jets my last purchase Was a TS8160 I bought for $175.. (I wanted the ability to print on DVD)   Much to my shock and horror the cartridges cost me $168 and there were NO generics at the time. I see you can buy the set of genuine now for about $130..  I now get generics. At around $4 per cart ($24 per set) still not as cheap as below.

My IP7200 printer on the other hand the genuine carts (1 colour less than the TS8160) cost around $140 at the time but I can get these for a little over a dollar each so $6 per set and I can honestly tell you that I have used many cycles of cartridges in them (at least the double digits, maybe 25 each colour). if that printer dies I will then look for another (you can still buy these new but it is harder to find)

Basically the manufacturers are giving you a printer for `free’ ... well of course they aren’t ..

If the head clogs up, which is not very often if the printer is used regularly, pulling it out and washing in a bath of IPA sometimes clears it..

I will add though that I have gone through several printers that I couldnt recover but I put it down to if I get 2 sets of generic cartridges through the printer after the originals run out then I am WELL in front.. and honestly you can get MANY sets through before any issues occur.
And when your printer dies there are many nice little belts and motors you can salvage from it.

I have 3 people in my household who all print `massive amounts’ of prints, probably an exaggeration I reckon we Go through a ream a month between both printers.. hardly a print shop though..

Kind Regards,

Mick

I fully agree with this argument when we are talking about the "cheap" inkjets. However the goal posts do move somewhat when a higher-end printer is involved.
Just sayin'
