Hi all. This is NOT my computer, but as I offer PC service as one of my business lines, I was called in to look at this issue today on a client's PC. Since the latest W10 forced update, MS now INSIST you use Microsoft Edge as your browser. If you try to install another browser such as Chrome, Opera or Firefox, W10 moans that you should really only be using MS Edge: ![]() ....and the main issue with THIS damn pop-up(other then the fact it does it at all), is that it is BROKEN. NONE of the buttons work. You can even click on "Open Microsoft Edge" - and it doesn't. The annoyance with this excrement, is two-fold: (1) That MS interrupts your attempt to run the installer for any of those other browsers as mentioned, and (2) that none of the options work on the pop-up, so you are effectively FORCED to ONLY use Edge. Has anyone else seen this issue? I bloody bet many of the members here have...... ![]() Since the latest update, W10 now seems to want to FORCE you to do ALL app installs via their MS Store. I installed Ifanview so as to capture and crop the image above so I could post it here, and as with the browsers above, running the installer run MS Store, and insists that you install it via them. Again, I need to point out - NONE of the options in the pop-up above work. Clicking on "Open Microsoft Edge" - does not open Edge. Clicking on "Install anyway" - does nothing. Clicking on "Change my app recommendation settings >" - does nothing. So, you have a broken intermediate app P.O.S. that is intercepting you trying to run any exe installer, and then it won't let you actually select any of the options presented, so you CAN'T install Chrome, Opera or Firefox, cos you just get stuck at this window every single time you try to run any of the installers for those browsers. Yes, full reboot and restart etc tried, naturally, but this is a permanent problem in the client's machine. They have an anti-virus, and it is fully up to date. ESET I think it was - something beginning with E. Anyone got any ideas that does not involve a 20lb lump hammer? My own personal one was to suggest setting them up with a copy of Linux Mint to try out - all they want is internet and email, which would be perfect for that. They had never heard of Linux. The stuff you have to fight MS over in W10 these days, is starting to feel absurd. Oh, and on the email thing - the other problem they were having was stupid Microsoft Live email locking up all the time, and would not let them send messages(since the latest update) - and any email they get with an attachment, Live mail will NOT open it - Live Mail just moans that it could not open it, without actually saying in any form whatsoever WHY - not even an error code you could research. I fixed that, by putting a link on their desktop to Gmail website, which auto-logs them into their gmail - and everything works perfectly via that route, but I am loathe to leave them using Edge for even that. F-ing Windoze 10, man......... ![]() ![]() Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

See the 2 highlighted boxes I've been using Windows 10 since it came out and yes there were a few problems at first but now it's brilliant., fast, clean and works You don't "have to" use Edge, it just recommends it I use Firefox, Chrome, and a few other browsers on my Windows 10 with no problems but I actually prefer Edge, it's faster Click where it says "change my app recommendation settings" and turn it off if you don't like the suggestions Edit just read the post fully, if the boxes don't work, run an antivirus scanner, reboot and uninstall any cr@p that's on the machine and try again Edited 2020-08-28 16:41 by lew247 |

It's not W10 Starter Edition is it? If so, you can upgrade to normal W10 home at no cost. That will free up a few restrictions. If it is already W10 Home, there is a setting somewhere that allows installing other than from the Windows Store. You will have to Google it. It's not a problem that have had on any system I manage. Perhaps risky, but when windows does stuff like that to me, I hit CTRL-ALT-Delete and select the Task Manager. From there, I select the application that is offending me and click "End Task". Bye bye! Visit Vegipete's *Mite Library for cool programs. |

Ouch. The last time MS forced a browser on people they got a HUGE fine (for anti-competitive practices). They paid AND changed to allow other browsers. I guess they never learn. Or don't mind paying. Thanks guys, and I note lew247's edit at the bottom of his post, after he posted his reply - if only it was that simple, Lew..... ![]() @ TassyJim: Not sure about that. I know it is 64-bit, but I forgot to check specifically if it was starter edition. I expect not. I would have thought at lease home edition. I will find out though. @ vegipete: Yep, can kill it with that, but it just keeps coming back when you try to run the exe installers again. @ JohnS: Yeah, I EXPECT it is just a broken app pop-up thing, and MS will most likely have fixed that in the next update, but still.... I concur with Grogster. I have had exactly the same run-around with my Win10 laptop and it is now consigned to the scrap bin. I don't have that many years left to waste any more hours on that MS crap. My trusty win7 laptop might be slow and heavy but it is reliable. |

I put Thunderbird on my Wife's laptop ages ago because Windows Mail was playing up. Just the other week, I ended up putting Thunderbird onto my elderly neighbour's laptop because he was having similar problems with Mail to that above. Bit easier for him than going to the Gmail website. Last reports, all going well with it. I also (rightly or wrongly) use Thunderbird. ChopperP |

MS are certainly forcing everyone to use only their apps. Fortunately I had already installed Opera and Chrome before this started but sometimes get popups while using them telling me to switch to Edge. A similar thing happened with Hotmail / Live. When logging in I was switched to a MS account signup page that looked the same Live login page, now I keep getting notifications to complete the signup. I can find no way to back out of the signup. |

I had a problem with an update recently that was preventing the printer from working. Every time it updated I went into update history and uninstalled the update. So if you go into your update history you should be able to uninstall the offending update and hope that next time it installs it is OK.
