i do not have a usb a to a cable can i still update the firmware using the usb b cable?

"Yes", see the "Alternative Method" on page 123 of the manual.

Yes, you can do it using USB type A to A (normal USB communication) or USB type A to B for serial communication.

You can read in Appendix G of the CMM2 User Manual more details about these two approaches.
