Are you using the A-A cable? Attach the A-A cable. Verify that the power is off. Hold the firmware button and press the power button to power it up. Does the cube programmer find the usb device at this point? (Also windows should make the "added device" noise) Micromites and Maximites! - Beginning Maximite |

There's an internal boot system you can't overwrite so it's not bricked - so don't worry. John Edited 2020-11-21 08:33 by JohnS |

I am not sure what the reset does on the retromax. To remove all your programs and settings from memory, short pin 40 to ground (pin 39) during startup. That will leave the firmware in place and should give you the 'new out of the box' experience. Doing the firmware update will not do any harm and you need to know how to do it eventually. Note that the com port number will most likely not be the same as circuitgizmos 13 Using UART instead of USB is slow. A few minutes instead of a few seconds but both methods work equally well. IF the reset button is the same as the reset button on the standard CMM2, then no, it does the same as power cycling. You need to ground pin 40 VK7JH MMedit |

Page 15 of the manual describes the procedure. I 'think' that pin 39/40 are on the end of the connector closest to the USB ports on the retromax. BUT I AM ONLY GOING BY A PHOTO, so check your documentation. I 'think' I can see a 39 on the silkscreen on the circuit board. Don't short the pins unless you are sure you have the correct pins. The other end of the connector has 3.3V and 5V so not a good idea to short them. I use circuit board jumpers but the blade of a screwdriver will do the job. Jim VK7JH MMedit |

That sounds like you weren't in firmware flash mode or didn't have the correct com port selected. Connect the USB to your PC as normal. With the CMM2 off, press the firmware update button (on the side) and hold it pressed while you turn the CMM2 on. Release the firmware button. Start Cube programmer and select the UART mode and choose your com port. Click 'connect' When you start the CMM2 in firmware update mode, nothing appears on the monitor. Jim VK7JH MMedit |

IF grounding pin 40 while you turn it on didn't do anything, you do have to update the firmware. When I said "Connect the USB to your PC as normal." I did want you to use the normal A-B USB cable that you do have. Serial is OK to update with, just slow. Connect the USB to your PC as normal. With the CMM2 off, press the firmware update button (on the side) and hold it pressed while you turn the CMM2 on. Release the firmware button. Start Cube programmer and select the UART mode and choose your com port. Click 'connect' Jim Edited 2020-11-21 16:10 by TassyJim VK7JH MMedit |

Glad it's working again. I rarely use the serial A-B cable for firmware updates. Too slow. Perhaps Windows decided to have a nap partway through while you were doing the update. The USB and A-A cable is definitely the way to go... Jim VK7JH MMedit |

Hi Mark, All, It is SUPER easy to make a USB A-A cable, Just find two similar cables and cut them in half and join the 4 wires one to one, ie BLACK to BLACK RED to RED WHITE to WHITE GREEN to GREEN You probably don’t even have to solder the wires, although that would be my recommendation, just twist them together and insulate with tape. It’s only used for 18s to flash then put away till the next time. Regards, Mick Mick's uMite Stuff can be found >>> HERE (Kindly hosted by Dontronics) <<< |
