Seasons greetings Can anyone tell me where to get the thicker gauged, tinned wire for use on breadboards. I have been using the thinner, copper wire for many years but want to switch to the thicker, tinned stuff. I know jaycar and the likes sell ready made kits but I would like rolls of my own that I can cut to length. I live in New Zealand so shopping local is preferable but I am willing to source overseas. PS I've tried to upload a picture, hope I did it successfully. Cheers |

I've used solid core phone cable or solid cat 5 cable. Just strip the outer coating off. |

It's a breadboard tool. I've got some in front of me now that has to be the best part of 10 years old and while it is discolored the circuit seems to work ok. Most of the breadboards are pretty cheap and just as likely to corrode internally as the wire. But YMMV it's just a suggestion. You could always buy the premade jumpers from ebay or alliexpress they are dirt cheap just need to wait on delivery. |

I'm probably misunderstanding, but it's sold on eBay and Amazon as 22 AWG solid core hookup wire. Sometimes it is also described as "tinned", I wouldn't like to say whether that is the correct use of the term. Not tinned . check - if it's copper wire, but not copper coloured it is I have used ethernet cable and that is a single stranded copper coloured wire - which is as you say, not tinned but every bit of Telephone cable I've ever used was tinned. |

The tinning is there for corrosion resistance but of course it also makes for good solderability. I just checked the diameter of the pre-made multi-colour breadboard links that I bought in a plastic box a few years ago and yes it's 0.71mm without the insulation; 1.5mm with the PVC insulation. 22 AWG is 0.65mm dia. so the difference is the tin. The little 25 gram uninsulated roll I bought from Jaycar was A$10 a year or so ago but you can get a 100g roll for $20 from them - half the price per gram. The 25 gram, 22 AWG roll calcultes to a length close to 7 metres. I checked a few other places and sure enough you can do better than that. There's a small electronics manufacturer, Wiltronics.com.au, here in Ballarat in Victoria that has a fair range of gauges and spool sizes and they do a 100 gram 0.71mm diameter spool for A$16. The usual suspects on the web can also be cheaper, but surprisingly not a lot cheaper. Mouser want A$45 for a 100 foot (say 33 metre) PVC insulated roll - various colours. One nice thing about the pre-cut insulated breadboard wire we all normally use is that it's nice and straight and has the pre-stripped bent ends. If you buy an un-insulated roll for breadboard work it'll coil up as it comes off the roll and you'll have to straighten it somehow or risk causing shorts. If you're doing lots of links that's not as easy as it seems. If it's being used for hook-up links on matrix boards though, it is a good method. Greg |

Regarding breadboard jumper wires, I particularly like these: https://www.adafruit.com/product/758 They come in a bundle, and you can strip off individual wires, or leave them connected, as you prefer. The link above is to male-to-male jumpers, but they also have male-to-female (breadboard to pin header) and female-to-female (pin header to pin header) versions. I certainly use these myself as well as hookup wire jumpers, but I have read that their square cross-section isn't good for the longevity of solderless breadboards. Best wishes, Tom MMBasic for Linux, Game*Mite, CMM2 Welcome Tape, Creaky old text adventures |

If all you want is a roll of un-insulated tinned wire, Jaycar have it Tinned Copper Wire - 25 gram Pack CAT.NO: WW4032 They also have a larger roll Jim VK7JH MMedit |

Thanks for all the help. If I had managed to include my original photo then this post would have been a lot clearer. With your guidance I think I have found it now. https://www.amazon.com/TUOFENG-Wire-Solid-different-colored-spools/dp/B07TX6BX47/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=hookup+wire&qid=1609281508&sr=8-6 I will order one of these boxes today. Still have to work out how to include a photo to this forum. Glen |
