faster. HOWEVER currently the BEGIN, WHILE, IF, THEN, DO, +LOOP, etc. keywords are all defined in terms of lower-level Forth words. If I implement them in C instead then I will probably get a measurable performance improvement. I'm going for a lie down. I should have said in my first post that this isn't 100% my own work, I ported an x86 assembler Forth implementation https://github.com/nornagon/jonesforth to "C" and then just had to debug it and solve the problems with CMM2/CSUB compatibility. Before I discovered jonesforth I did get 25% of the way there on my own and then had to decide between porting someone else's work and getting it done ASAP, or doing it all myself and not having it until the summer - if then, I chose the former but am glad I made a start on my own. Note the MMBasic version is faster than my initial measurement too since I removed the unnecessary variables from the NEXT statements. You can do it now. Use MMBasic to read lines from the file and call spforth() with them one at a time. You're only paying the cost for this once whilst they are compiled. Now if you added a construct to the pre-processor equivalent to C's: #if 0 ignore this, and this, and this #endif Then I could read Forth from the .BAS file and we have "inline assembler" ... Not a pre-processor issue - it would need to somehow skip the tokenising which is core MMbasic. In essence you are asking for a data statement without the DATA command. I think something like a CSUB block but allowing ascii could work as this could be generally useful. I'll have a think. Of course you need to do better then a 0.94/1.6 ratio in performance terms to make it worthwhile |

I've managed to "acquire" a couple of command slots so my initial thoughts are: DEFINEDATA n ascii more ascii as much ascii as you like END DEFINEDATA ? MM.INFO(DATA ADDRESS n) ' gives the address in memory of the start of the ascii data block number n ? MM.INFO(DATA SIZE n) ' gives the length in bytes of the data block number n Limitations: You can't have "END DEFINEDATA" in the ascii for obvious reasons. You also can't use the C "or" character in the ascii (|) This is a lot of work as I have to stop the firmware interfering with the ascii in quite a few places so I need to know if it will be worthwhile. Thanks Peter, As far as Forth goes I should have all the easy and medium difficulty performance gains worked through within a couple of weeks so you can make a judgement call then. Beyond that there would be converting some of it directly to ARM Thumb and that's a much longer term prospect with less certainty of success. What is ascii data? Only 7 bit values from 32 to 127, not including 124? Full 8 bit binary data would be useful for embedding graphics, sprites and sound. (And machine code for a 6502 simulator. ;-) Visit Vegipete's *Mite Library for cool programs. |

No for the reason explained above - the code would be tokenised and therefore changed You can do this already with a FONT or CSUB. Obscure ? yes, but identical in function so no reason to add Flash can only be erased in 128Kb chunks - far too coarse to be of any use I use it internally for line number error handling and include files |

I have a spiral bound printed PDF of that book and the 35th Anniversary Edition reproduction of the "Jupiter ACE (FORTH Programming)" manual even as I type. Thankyou, I will snag and print a copy. Might want to give it a few weeks, it's just a "proof of concept", now I need to find out if it can be made fast enough to "matter" and then worry about filling in the gaps and improving its compliance with Brodie's books.
