HOLDOFF ON UPDATING WINDOWS 10 1803 OR 20H2 FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS! MICROSOFT HAS A GLITCH IN THE AVAILABLE MARCH UPDATE! GHACKS.NET reports that an attempt to print might cause a bluescreen lockup on some machines. MIcrosoft confirms that users might receive an APC_INDEX_MISMATCH error with lockup when attempting to print to some printers from some apps and published a workaround. They plan to release a fix next week. There is also a glitch when printing to a FILE. KB5000802, KB5000808, KB5000822 might fix the FILE glitch but not the printer glitch. If you're running W10PRO go to START > PC SETTINGS > UPDATE & SECURITY and click on PAUSE UPDATES FOR 7 DAYS repeatedly. It should be safe to click on RESUME UPDATES in the first few days of March. It's a good idea to delay the installation of monthly updates for a few weeks after they are released since many of them are buggy as first released. You should always make an new full IMAGE backup of your system partitions using Macrium Reflect just before allowing the monthly Windows update to run just in case the update breaks something. In the future I'll try to provide new information about Windows updates as I find it. Everyone here should subscribe to the weekly newletter ASKWOODY.COM. Their regular contributors include Woody Leonhard, Susan Bradley, Will Fastie, Roberta Scholz, Brian Ligingston, Fred Langa, Max Oppenheimer, Deanna McElveen, and Lance Whitney. If you give them a few bucks once a year you will see an expanded edition of the website, and you will have access to a VERY GOOD troubleshooting forum! The current edition contains a rundown on the current update problems, plus: 1. the removal of the now abandoned legacy Edge browser. 2. the removal of the abandoned Adobe Flash via KB4577586. 3. various problems with the installation of buggy Intel microcode updates. 4. exchange server attack vulnerabilities. 5. an urgent plea to make offsite backups with a story about RUST losing 25 servers. 6. a Fred Langa piece on a Windows login backdoor which has been there since Win98. 7. a link to Fred's decades old ROBOCOPY template. and 8. a Sandra Henry-Stocker piece on interoperability between Windows and Linux using PuTTY or an OpenSSH server on Windows, reconciling differences in the line ending characters between Linux and Windows, and mounting Linux folders on Windows and Windows folder on Linux. It's a good read. Paul in NY Edited 2021-03-18 02:44 by Paul_L |

I note that to find out about e.g. #6 one needs to PAY. If it's along the lines stated this should be free information for everyone! John [thankfully not using Windows] Edited 2021-03-18 05:09 by JohnS |

Only a 'fool' would update Windows on April 1! ![]() I find that any update with Win10 is just a question of what and when you figure out that it broke something that used to work! Last time it killed my Wifi....no networks available. I did have automatically reconnect turned off, but it wouldn't manually connect either! I eventually got it working again....but it's maddening! Sorry guys, I generated some confusion. @John - ASKWOODY.COM is run by volunteers. It's a non-profit. I give them $5 every year and get access to the newsletter and the forum. The backdoor was publicized in a KB back in 1995. Fred Langa wrote it up on LangaList then. He has a long memory. Using the backdoor involves backing up your user data, boot from an installation CD or repair medium, using a Windows recovery environment command prompt, rename the sticky keys executable sethc.exe to sethc.bak, copy cmd.exe to sethc.exe, exit the command prompt, reboot, press the shift key five times quickly to start sethc.exe which is not cmd.exe. You will be signed in as SYSTEM, the highest priveledge level. Create a new administrator account named TEMPA with NET USER TEMPA /ADD, NET LOCALGROUP ADMINISTRATORS TEMPA ADD, NET USER TEMPA password. Reboot and sign into the new TEMPA account and clean up the earlier accounts. It is, of course, much simpler to just restore the butchered system from your latest Macrium image. You do make a new Macrium image every month just before you let Windows update itself ...... don't you? @Jim - you're lucky. It didn't break your combination of hardware. @Paul - the technique of passing updates among local computers saves a lot of time on the customer's end ... the update only has to download through the ISP once then it moves around on the local Ethernet a lot faster. @Steve - the March 9 update will be ironed out by April 1 so you should delay updating until then. The next update will probably appear on April 6 and you should delay installing it until May 1 by which time it will probably be fixed. The "fool" is the guy who lets Windows update on March 10 and April 7. Paul in NY |

Depending on the setting in windows update, it can be set for local AND PCs on the internet. So it can use up download/upload. Go to advanced/delivery optimisation. At least that is the way I see it. Paul in Oz ... That's the way I see it too. It speeds things up when you have multiple Windows boxes on a local network. Paul in NY |

UPDATE The printer bug in the March update MAY have been fixed according to WindowsLatest.com. KB5001649 was halted, then emergency update KB5001567 was released on 3/15, followed by a different KB5001649 on 3/18, then today (3/21) KB5001649 was pulled and a different KB5001567 was offered again. My general impression is that Windows is way too complicated. It tries to be all things to all people. Microsoft doesn't have enough engineers to keep up with it and sometimes the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. DO NOT UPDATE YET! CONTINUE TO WAIT! They'll get it fixed eventually.
