Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I am thinking of ditching my broadband cable service and getting a wireless modem.
That will get rid of my phone landline and its associated nuisance calls. I know I can get rid of the phone and still keep the broadband but I can get it a lot cheaper if I go wireless. I know very little about this subject so my question is  will it be a problem at all to no longer have an IP address.

You won't have a 'public' IP address. The vast majority of wireless providers use CGNAT

It is only a problem if you want to connect to your home from outside.
For normal use, you won't see any difference.

Another possible issue is, you are sharing the IP with lots of other users and if one of them is naughty, the IP can get added to a AV blocked IP list. This can happen even with your own IP when a block gets listed.

Last week the spam filter I use decided to block google groups so no one is safe.

If you just want to get rid of the scam calls, the Telstra Call Guardian is excellent.
I haven't had a scam call (or phone poll)) for 12 months.

I use Internode on Wireless NBN, and pay a little extra for a pack that includes a fixed ip address. I need the fixed ip so I can lock down the cloud servers and other services I administer. For example, I've set up remote ftp and mail servers to only accept a connection if it comes from my ip address. And some system administrators wouldn't let me access remote desktops unless I had a fixed ip.

So for me, a fixed ip was a must.

I find the problem with wireless NBN or any internet phone is I have no phone when the power goes down. So in an emergency I have no phone!

Thanks, I will try it out before I ditch the NBN. I do have an alarm on my workshop that uses an ESP8266 and I can switch it on and off remotely but I don't use that feature so no IP address will not bother me.
