Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Have a project that uses the CH340 USB-Serial interface between PC and project. This has been very reliable up until recently where the serial port would be lost and the program had to be reset and restarted. I did a bit of inet reading and a couple of people mentioned that they had similar problems until upgrading the CH340 driver. I hunted high and low and couldn't find a more recent driver for the 2019 version I had on the Windows 10 PC. Out of desperation I hunted and found an earlier version dated 2011 and when I installed it everything was good again. This lasted a couple of days and the trouble resurfaced. Doing some detective work it seemed that the serial port was lost exactly 8 minutes after the program started so I was convinced that the issue was with the PC caused by some timer in Windows 10. Looking at the driver revealed that Microsoft updates had in its wisdom replaced the 2011 driver with the 2019 version which has the issue. Re-installing the 2011 version fixed the issue and telling Windows 10 not to update drivers when doing other updates hopefully will keep the peace.

Thought I would share this experience so that hair pulling out may be minimized.

Frank, there are two methods, one for win 10 PRO using the Group Policy Editor and one for win 10 Home by adding a Registry entry.

I think this link describes them both:
How to disable driver updates on Win 10

All the Best

I often have a similar problem with a (clone?) Prolific USB-Serial interface. I often have to force Win10 back to an older driver version:

I'll check that link to see if it makes the old driver stick for good.
Visit Vegipete's *Mite Library for cool programs.
