Hi all. Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I keep getting a pop-up notification: "USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windoze does not recognize it." I have not plugged in ANY new USB stuff - this PC is strictly for audio/video editing, and never has any new USB stuff plugged in. I tried a full-reboot. I tried removing all the USB devices(including KB and Mouse) I tried disabling notifications at this point. I still keep getting this 'Notification' about every two seconds. You cannot stop it. If I click on the X on the notification, it just pops back up again. Remember - I turned off notifications, but still keep getting this one. Sounds like a virus type behaviour. AV scan says no problems(Windows Defender, fully up to date) Has anyone else see this? WTF?! ![]() Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

https://www.partitionwizard.com/disk-recovery/the-last-usb-device-malfunctioned-windows-10.html Google is your best friend. Similar pages exist for W8.1, and they also refer to the same topics. PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

Google is not my best friend, not even my friend at all. ![]() I use duckduckgo. Reading my way through the link you put up(thanks), but this is all talking about you getting the message when you plug some USB thing in. I am getting this message about ever 2s, even if I boot-up with NO USB stuff connected at all - not even the KB or mouse. I doubt the link will solve that, but I will keep reading. ![]() Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

Feeling spied on by Google and infuriated (and spied on by a different company) by Bing!, I eventually ended up with Startpage. :) I hope this might help: https://www.diskpart.com/articles/usb-device-not-recognized-pop-up-7201.html Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

Found this (on duckduckgo!). Some other items to check. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebooks-Archive-Read-Only/USB-not-recognized-even-when-there-s-no-USB-device-at-all/td-p/2668745 The reference on how to remove the usb root hubs has gone so you may need to chase that. Hope it helps. Tony |

As one/some of the links posted say, your computer probably has some internal USB devices. John |

Internal USB devices.... SD card interface, camera... anyway you should be able to find that device in the device manager, and update the driver. If nothing else, it would reset the part. There was one tip that caught my eye. Disconnect the power supply... No idea how that would work, but it is in many lists. Volhout PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

Unrecognised USB devices can also point to malfunctioning inbuilt USB controllers / hubs that support a range of USB ports on a particular motherboard. Edited 2021-06-10 13:30 by KeepIS NANO Inverter: Full download - Only Hex Ver 8.1Ks |

Thanks for all the pointers chums. ![]() I will have a bit more of a hunt around. PC is a desktop, not a laptop, so there are no built-in USB devices, other then the physical USB interface on the motherboard itself. All the USB things I DO have connected to the machine, work just fine, I was just trying to isolate WHERE this error message was coming from. I thought that by turning off all the notifications, that would shut those pop-up messages up, but it does not seem to which is annoying. ![]() Smoke makes things work. Hi Grogster, Have a look in device manager to see which USB device is not functioning, indicated by a yellow triangle. Right click and select DISABLE this device.. IF your PC is still functioning the way you want it will not impact anything and shouldn't come up with the message again... If something you want to use on your PC doesn't work, you then know what the cause is. Regards, Mick Mick's uMite Stuff can be found >>> HERE (Kindly hosted by Dontronics) <<< |

So the MB has no internal header for a few extra ports?, most do. If every available USB port on the MB works then it may be some stupid driver or initialisation timing issue, however the fact that it comes back as soon as you close the notification window points to something other than a hardware issue, more like the incorrect message for another software issue that may not affect the system in any way, except for the stupid message, that's all assuming that it's definitely a windows error report popup, and not something sinister as you initially considered. @ Mick - thanks, will look into doing that. @ KeepIS - Yes, it does have internal headers for 2x USB like front case USB sockets etc, but there is nothing connected to that header. All my USB stuff connects to the rear panel sockets. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

But I've seen those go faulty on rare occasions, and they often report an unrecognised USB device error because it is a USB device on the system bus, it does not need anything plugged into the header or any port for an error to occur if one is playing up or a USB motherboard driver for the part has corrupted. Just a thought if you turn nothing else up. NANO Inverter: Full download - Only Hex Ver 8.1Ks |

Had a look through the BIOS settings? Anything silly there? Visit Vegipete's *Mite Library for cool programs. |

At the moment I'm guessing that the chipset USB driver might be corrupted. You'd need to find the right driver for that motherboard (including revision number if it has one) and reinstall it. Get that info off the motherboard itself - don't trust anything that software says it is or a make & model of computer.
