I have a local FM transmitter setup, streaming audio via a cell-phone and the iHeart Radio app. The station is only transmitted on AM locally, which is these days flooded with static and all sorts of crackle noises. So, I wanted to provide a local FM copy via the LPFM slots. As a slight digression, NZ has several frequencies available for free in the upper and lower FM radio bands, for any power up to 1-Watt, provided your transmitter complies with a few basic rules. You don't have to pay anything to put these on-air, and you don't need a license. You only have to respect other LPFM stations, and not to upset your neighbour LPFM users(broadcast too close to them without acceptable separation). ![]() ![]() The problem is that after about a day or so, the iHeart Radio app just closes. I have not been able to work out WHY this happens. I have already set the settings to allow the iHeart Radio app full access to the WiFi and also full-power, so it should NOT be powering off to save power. The cell-phone is permanently powered, with its battery taking over in the event of a power-cut. Cellphone OS fully up to date, iHeart Radio app is the current version. When I discover it not working, I go check, and the iHeart Radio app is not even running anymore. I have to restart it. I have done this more then ten times now, and it is getting old..... ![]() Does anyone have any suggestions OTHER then the hammer I have poised in my right hand?.... Smoke makes things work. Grogs: Amusingly enough I listen to some New Zealand radio stations through Radio Garden. One I liked just recently stopped working, though: http://radio.garden/listen/auckland-80s/ghWDelYs But there are stations all over the globe to listen to. Not that this addresses your iHeart issue... Micromites and Maximites! - Beginning Maximite |

Finding the direct stream address and not using the iHeart portal will be much more reliable. Finding the stream address can be difficult 'cos iHeart want your 'business' I had similar problems with Radio Southland, one of your local stations. If I try and stream on my phone, it insists on loading an app but I have the direct stream programmed into my main radio so no problems around the house. Jim VK7JH MMedit |

Is the phone on iOS or Android? These OS treat background apps very differently. If on Android, look there: https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/galaxy-note9-series/radio-turns-off-when-phone-is-idle/td-p/929631 |

Hello everyone - thanks for the replies. ![]() @ CG: This is a good site, and I have never seen or heard of it before, and it DOES have the station I want. (Newstalk ZB) I will see if I can get in there on the phone using the browser on the phone rather then the iHeart Radio app. @ hitsware2: Thanks for the links, but none of those support the station I want. Thanks for posting those links though. ![]() @ Jim: Yeah, that is how I would like to do it. CG's link does seem to give me the direct stream address, so I am very keen to try this out on Monday, when I will next be at the transmitter site. @ Lodovik: Android. Checked link, but I had already enabled that(full power etc), but thanks for the suggestion. ![]() At this point in time, I plan to try CG's idea first, and if that does not work long-term, perhaps I could email the station and ask them for the direct link to the stream explaining the situation. Perhaps. ![]() Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/on-demand/listen-from-overseas/ Worth a go. All I get is a recorded message telling me that due to broadcast restriction re Tokyo Olympics, they can't broadcast to my area. Jim Edited 2021-08-01 12:33 by TassyJim VK7JH MMedit |

@ hitsware: Newstalk ZB is only available on AM in my area(with the crappy sound quality), not on any FM frequency. This is why I am trying to transmit locally on an FM frequency. ![]() @ Jim - Thanks, will look into this also. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |
