Hi folks,

Lewis @lew247 was recently generous enough to send me a care package of stuff that he was done with, mostly to do with his weather-station project, but also a bunch of other interesting and useful devices that I have spent the last few evening sorting.

There are a few items from the "haunted wing" of the package that I can't identify ... or if I have identified that identification means nothing to me, or I don't know what use I would them for. Obviously Lewis could just tell me what they are, but I thought it might make an interesting and educational thread if (with his permission) I posted some pictures and listened to what people had to say.

Best wishes,

Tom

- The 3 devices in the top-right looks like LED lamps of some sort, but I'm not sure what they are supposed to fit into.
- The soldering paste perplexes me because I thought solder paste was a suspension of solder particles in flux ... and the contents is the wrong colour for that isn't it ?

The schematic says this is a TDA2030 and Google identifies it as a stereo amplifier circuit ... presumably not of any use to me since I don't own a Hi-Fi ?

Directly above the 18B20? looks like a mains filter and above that looks like a LED driver.

In the 1st photo the LED lamps look like wedge base LED replacements - might work for replacing #161 incandescent bulbs? Can test these by using alligator clips to connect to 12V power supply. Most of these should already include a diode so reverse polarity (by plugging into socket backwards) will not kill them. Some cars use these for various illumination.

The photo is out of focus for the plastic can, but this might be solder flux paste?

In the 2nd photo looks like possible LED driver (constant current output?) in the upper left, clamp on ferrite bead in the middle, AC line filter on right. The USB dongle thing with antenna might be some kind of SDR dongle for analyzing radio RF stuff? Or, could be some sort of ESP8266 with ext antenna? The sensor looks like a DS18S20 compatible temp sensor (as already mentioned earlier).

The 3rd photo looks like a audio amp kit. Might be handy for driving neighbors crazy when connected to appropriate *mite programmed to play annoying beep tones at random times.

Pic 2
Top - Probably a constant current LED driver. Can't read the text.
RHS - mains input filter
Below that - some sort of temperature sensor. Looks like 2 wires so may be PT100
Centre - ferrite filter to clip over a lead to reduce interference
Left - R820T2 generic software defined radio tuner. OOh... I like that!

Pic 3
Definitely an audio amp kit. Can't make out the chip number, but guessing at around 5-10W from the heatsink size. Will need a suitable mains transformer.

Radio isn't something I have an interest in. PM me your snail-mail address and I'll put it in the post to you.

Best wishes,

You should thank Lewis.

All packed up and in the post tomorrow morning - 2nd class so you should see it by the end of the week.

Best wishes,

Thanks for joining in everyone, and thanks for the definitive answers (and the stuff in the first place) Lewis.

1. I'm really only interested in digital electronics and hobbyist level stuff at that. Is the Mains RF Filter of any use to me as anything other than a prelude to electrocuting myself ? Is it of any use to anyone else (UK only please) and of sufficient value for it to be worth me putting it in the post ... not asking because I want money for it, but if it's only worth a couple of quid you may as well buy one new.

2. Ditto the Ferrite filter, is that likely to be of any use to me ?

3. The PMS5003 looks for all the world like a Lilliputian PC power supply except for the connector, I would never have figured that one out.

4. I assume the temp sensor goes with the 3-pin DS1820's that I "inherited", or is one of those already built into it ?

5. The paste is of course "Solder Flux Paste" ... I had confused myself by conflating it with "Solder Paste" hence I was wondering why it wasn't grey/metallic.

Best wishes,

Tom

Hi Peter,

I just need to check with Lewis as there are a whole stack of environmental sensors and since he gave them to me for nothing I was only really considering myself their custodian in case he ever wanted them back. Personally I would be happy to pass them on to people who actually had definite projects in mind as even excluding them the care package contained many other unexpected items of value to me.

Best wishes,

Tom

If the waterproof sensor has 3 wires, it's probably a DS18B20, but if only 2 wires, probably something else (although DS81B20 can be operated with 2 wires, I've never seen that waterproof configuration).

The DS18B20 (or whatever other sensor) is already inside the stainless steel sheath.

This reminds me a lot of the "traveling mystery box of electronics" that existed about 5 years ago. The idea there was that a fixed-size box would be filled by person #1 with misc electronics stuff and sent to person #2.

Person #2 would pick a certain number of items from the box, insert their items (same number or volume) and mail this box to person #3.

It was a ring of people (the order of people randomly rearranged each cycle) that would benefit from each other's odd electronics stuff. These things are hobby electronics gadgets, modules, or electronics parts.

I was in the cycle a few times for a few different rings. Found and kept a couple of fun oddball items and contributed some things I had spares of or no longer needed.

The physical cardboard box was reused or replaced if needed. The one in the U.S. was about 12"/8"/6" and was sent via a fixed/flat rate express service of about $15 in shipping. Another larger box was sent at a slower shipping rate at a lower cost. There was an international box that was about 20cm on each side.

I'd be willing to seed a box to start if there is interest. A ring of 3-5 participants works well. The same box can be repeated in the ring (people in a different order) or it can be transferred to be the starting box of another ring of people.

Anyone interested?

If the capacitor by the bridge rec on the drawing is 25v rating or so then using a 12v transformer would give about 16v DC supply. That's about 12W output per channel with 1% THD into 8R speakers. Plenty loud enough to annoy people. :)

I wouldn't try for a higher output with those heatsinks, even though the chip is designed for up to 20W into 4R.

The TDA2020 has been around for a while. It's never been a bad little chip though. THD isn't as bad as it looks at normal listening levels. Even nicer with a regulated supply.

That's a neat idea CG but I doubt you were thinking of a trans-atlantic box, I doubt that would even be a practical idea.

I couldn't seed one myself, but I'd happily participate in such a ring in the UK. I can probably scrape together a couple of items that might be of interest, or even just poke around in the box without taking anything and ship it on for a cycle or two.

Best wishes,

Tom

If I sent it to the UK, it would have to be under a couple of pounds. 225 gram is about $15. I'd seed that in one direction only.
