"It's nice to see that BASIC isn't dead in an educational environment." My first contact with BASIC was EduBASIC on a DEC PDP8 Mini Computer - the size of a refrigerator. The terminal was a Teletype machine with paper tape attachment. Both EduBASIC and the machine were truly basic. |

My first contact was on my Nascom-1. That machine had 2 EPROM sockets, which were used by the monitor. Luckily one small supplier could offer an additional board for the NASBUS that would take the Nascom-2 8kB BASIC ROM. So a minimal system consisting of a Nascom-1 (with T2 or T4 monitor), Buffer board (to convert the Nascom-1 to NASBUS), a 3-slot NASBUS motherboard, a 4kB (or was it 8k?) RAM board and the new EPROM board could be put together (with the keyboard, TV, cassette recorder and optional(!) power supply, of course). If you wanted to get rid of having to use EDIT <line_number> all the time you could get proper on-screen editing with a few modifications: Swap your existing monitor for the new NasSys monitor (to get cursor key support) and modify your Nascom-1 keyboard by adding additional keys to it (the spaces were already there). If you were rich (or hadn't already spent all your money on Nascom-1 kit) you could get a Nascom-2, of course, which already had BASIC on-board. It should have had enough RAM on board too, but due to world-wide shortages of that RAM chip, the first ones were supplied with a free memory board. Later, one of the Nascom magazines ran a monthly listing of the Nascom 8k BASIC ROM, so effectively Microsoft 8k BASIC 4.7 for the Z80 became available to anyone for free, if they were willing to mess with it a bit. :) That version is still around on the internet and has been used on a few projects now. I wasn't exactly rich at the time (and I'm still not) but I did "build" a Nascom II and then spent a day (and night) tracking down all the dry joints. I was truly quite emotional and very tired when I finally managed to get the red LED blinking on and off at one second intervals. My girlfriend (now wife) was completely baffled by all the fuss. Recently found a Nasbus Z80 CPU and two 256k memory boards I must have got from somewhere (never used them) but I wish I'd kept the Nascom which disappeared somewhere/sometime along the way in the past 40+ years.... There's an active Nascom group Here if you're interested. You may be able to find a Nascom-2 (they are NOT cheap now!) or a buyer for those bits. One of the members has now produced the Nascom-4 - a new interpretation on a FPGA, but with SDcard storage and a lot of compatibility. FYI: The second video shows an ECG (a kind of) for a Maximite based on an AD8232. Peter already presented something like this here 1/2019. It reminded me that I still had the components in the box unused. It should be easy to convert to the newer Mites (CMM2, Armmite F4, Picomite). Not sure I'm going to dive back into 8-bits after all this time Mick but I have applied to join the Group - so you never know. Instructive video's !!! The 3'rd video (with digital filtering) did not appear. Probably because he is running on the edge of what a 80MHz MM can do (every 10ms draw a box, draw a line, measure and ADC value, and some math). Video 1 is from Jan 2021 Video 2 is from Feb 2021 In video 2 he announces video 3, where he will add digital filtering. Video 3 did not show on Youtube until now (Okt 2021, 8 months later). I guess he did not succeed, and changed subject for the next video... Volhout PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |
