He's used xmodem in the photo, Tom. :) I'm pretty sure it'll work via any serial link, no matter whether it's via a USB stack or a UART. Same with AUTOSAVE. It just sets the system into receive mode to wait for text followed by Ctrl-Z. Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

Yes, and quite obviously I am an idiot, but let's be honest we all had some suspicion of that anyway didn't we ? Remember that bit about being an idiot, well I'm still a hardware/electronics ignoramus too and my attempt to teach myself more about this subject was "rudely" interrupted by some southener and his new-fangled CMM2 device ![]() Anyway sounds good and means my efforts on teaching MMB4L to send code and commands to other 'mites will be transferable, happy days! There is a God. And he is monochrome green (at least Peter's VGA screen was). So VeganMite is another option... PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

I rather fancy the idea of a PCB for this: VGA socket (with link(s), resistors/diodes to select white/green/amber?) PS/2 keyboard socket mini USB socket for console with on-board Microbridge Connector for external 5V input (with diode isolation from USB supply) Battery for RTC Not sure about some sort of joystick/controller socket. I don't know if Peter wants to support the Nunchuk? A PC switched joystick is clever enough for me. :) Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

I'm revisiting SD vs flash so hold off on PCB design. Will confirm in the next week or so |

FLASH or not?!?! No idea, but keep on, this issue is getting more and more and even more interesting! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Yes, Flash, Gordon. ;) TBH I rather fancy the idea of using flash storage. It works really well on the PicoMite now. However, SD also has its attractions. I guess I'm not bothered either way at the end of the day. :) It's just a pity that if you want a Black Pill with a pre-mounted flash chip in the UK you'll have to order one from China as no-one stocks them AFAIK. They aren't that bad to solder, but fiddly - and on the Black Pill you almost certainly have to solder it before the pins go on. It is not that bad, 8 little drops of paste, put the chip, and some hot air ( pencil beam). PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

Can you provide a link to a suitable hot air soldering pencil? PicoMite, Armmite F4, SensorKits, MMBasic Hardware, Games, etc. on fruitoftheshed |

I have one of These (85D). I've only tried soldering with it once, but I wasn't happy with the results. I need much more practice really. I read somewhere that you have to be careful with that model using the narrowest nozzle as it's possible to get it to overheat. I can't confirm that though. It's always a good idea to check the mains wiring, apparently, as sometimes there's no earth connection. ![]() Edited 2021-11-25 04:53 by Mixtel90 Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

same unit I have. I use it for most of my SMD stuff. never had a problem with it is about 5 years . top tip is to wind the air right down so it doesn't blow the bits all over the place. Hi for heat shrinking, lo for un/soldering |

I use a similar device, much older though, but have a nozzle that is 3mm. Yes you have to put the air flow very low (especially with the 3mm nozzle), otherwise your parts will go sailing... The 3mm nozzle allows you to use it like a soldering iron, you heat pin for pin (mwoah ... few pins at a time). For reworking a chip on an existing design that works finer, since you don't run the risk of heating area's not intended. Especially connector plastics is a worry. Sometimes you have to pack the connector in kitchen foil (metal) before reworking. PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

@Mixtel90, @CaptainBoing, @Volhout -- thanks for the tips. Don't want to have these little beggers "blowin' in the wind". PicoMite, Armmite F4, SensorKits, MMBasic Hardware, Games, etc. on fruitoftheshed |

I think also corresponding to the Picomite for just embedding, flash probably is all being necessary. ![]() But thinking of a new little Beginners-BASIC-Desktop-Computer forwarding the idea of the original Maximite ... SD would be great. ![]() ---- PS: Generally for data gathering and saving also being enbedded SD makes sense! Edited 2021-11-26 02:08 by Poppy ![]() ![]()
