I'm stuck in console hell.

I'm trying to install the latest stable from the winehq website, and everything went fine - I copied and pasted to the console each of the steps one after another, they all completed just fine INCLUDING the huge install of the stable package.

I received NO errors at the console - everything finished fine.

The problem is that there is no WINE icon on the desktop, there is no WINE app icon anywhere on the system, even under ALL APPLICATIONS.

I have a feeling I need to make this happen, but I am stuck at this point, as the winehq website does not elaborate on what to do once you have finished the install, to generate an icon somewhere so you can actually RUN the damn thing.

Can anyone help out at all?

Open the "Program Files" folder and look for the new folder (if they are sensible it will be called Wine, if not sort by date and pick the newest one). Open it and look for .EXE files. If you are lucky there will be just one or at least one called Wine_xxx.EXE. Double click it and see what happens. If it works paste a shortcut to it on the desk top. If none of the .EXE files work open the subfolders and try there.

"Bin" subfolder often contains the main program.

"Program files"?

That's a Windoze reference.
I'm on Linux Mint.....

Can you give me a path to the "Program Files" folder in the Linux filesystem tree?

I don't download support from winehq since the Fedora repositories have it. I just "dnf install wine" and it gets installed. I think a fresh install of Fedora workstation just installs it by default.  By using the repositories to get WINE, the normal linux update progess takes care of WINE updates automatically. Don't know if Mint has WINE in its repository but probably should.

Have you tried just typing wine at a command prompt to see if it will respond?

$ wine
Usage: wine PROGRAM [ARGUMENTS...]   Run the specified program
wine --help                   Display this help and exit
wine --version                Output version information and exit

I cannot speak for all versions of linux but on my systems application launcher or applications menu I get a WINE choice just under System Tools. It opens a Programs selection which may provide a windows file manager and Notepad selection as defaults.

I generally don't "WINE" anything. I just double click on a windows app and it will start the windows installation. The windows app then appears in the WINE application launcher and essentially just operates like any other linux app. I have a mix of linux and windows apps on my desktop (KDE) based on how often I need to open them.

Most all windows apps I have needed to use, such as TaskLink for my Unisite programmer, run just fine in linux with the WINE "wrapper". You may need to make a link from COM1 to /dev/ttyS0 (or /dev/ttyUSB0) or some similar links so that windows apps using serial ports can make it out of linux interfaces.

I am not sure where WINE things go on Mint but on my system there is a .wine hidden directory in my home directory (you need to Show Hidden Files in your linux file manager). Under .wine is my drive_c which then looks like a windows environment with Program Files, Program Files (x86), users and windows directories.

You can also open a command window, which should start at your /home/username directory. Then type "ls -al" and you should see a directory called .wine. cd to .wine and you can either ls or dir and see the windows directories.

I just installed Wine on my Ubuntu 18.04 computer.
It took a long time to download all the stuff.
Have a look at the article I have pointed to. It seems that it is easier and better to use Terminal to find and load Wine.
I tried one way and like you got nothing, after following a similar line as outlined in this article I got wine working.
Good luck

Looked it up and Mint has a repository for WINE. You need to consider if you want to use the Mint repository or keep the manual installation you implied you performed.

If you decide to use the repository, first remove the WINE installation you already did before doing a repository install or things can get confusing at some future point when you do updates.

"apt install wine64" should work to install WINE on Mint as it uses debian/ubuntu installation commands.  If you choose to go this way, when you do an "apt update && apt upgrade" on Mint, it will automatically keep WINE updated to the latest in the Mint repository.

Your choice. I always do the repository install because I don't want to be bothered to remember to manually update WINE.

GDay Grogster... :)

I've also recently started using 'Mint', I'm no expert on 'Wine' but from
what I gather it doesn't have a Gui console... I think that is what you
are expecting.

The folder phil99 is alluding to is normally hidden, any file or folder name
starting with a '.' (full stop) is hidden, in Mint's file manager you tick the
option to show hidden files. It can become a bit of a eyefull if you do...

If you really need to go there try this...

Open Mint's 'File Manager' then click 'View' at the top, under there you
will find an option 'Show Hidden Files'...

Then scroll down till you see a folder called '.wine'.

I use Wine to run an windows open source program called "LTSpice", it does
have link shown under 'Mint' applications and a link on my desktop...

Wine is just shell on it's install, there not much to run... I did find
"explorer.exe" and "notepad.exe", not much else...

Godoh, good link.  Surprised at the number of steps to get it running but I can see how they are necessary.

There is a config console but not a GUI console.

$ winecfg
will bring up a configuration GUI that is handy to add drive mappings. You should see that drive Z is automatically your linux home directory. You can map a few drives to your linux media drives/directories for example.

You can type winefile at a command prompt to get WINE's windows like file manager, or type wine explorer to get one that looks more like Microsoft's.

Keep in mind that WINE is not an emulator. It is like a bunch of helper apps/functions that allow a windows program to run within the linux OS environment, so a WINE GUI would not make any sense.

When I want to run a program under Wine, I just find the .exe file, right click on it and tell it to open with the Wine program loader.
Often there is a suggestion to use some other program but there is an "open with other program option" look there and tell it to open under wine.
Also if you look in your Home folder with Files program, you should see a .wine folder.
Open that folder and look for the drive C folder. There you will find Program files , which is where any windows type programs are stored.
I use Wine to run Subaru FreeSSM to talk to our Subaru car diagnostics.

When puzzled about where things are under Linux, as I frequently am, I find the "find" command invaluable:

sudo find / -name wine*
PicoMite, Armmite F4, SensorKits, MMBasic Hardware, Games, etc. on fruitoftheshed

Try PlayOnLinux

1 - Install the PlayOnLinux

sudo apt install playonlinux

2 - Search for PlayOnLinux on the app menu

Hi Grogster,

Generally it is far easier to use the packages provided by the distro. In your case you would use the mint app store (or ubuntu app store) to install the package. The package consists of the program itself, and all glue scripts and files to make it work in your distro.

If you install from WineHQ then you do not have the glue files and scripts (these vary per distro). Sometimes you can make the program appear in a menu by creating a WINE.desktop file in /usr/share/applications (for ubuntu). Be aware that you can (with root permissions) copy and adapt one of the other xxx.desktop files in that folder.
Complicating is that errors in your created xxx.desktop file will simply cause the xxx not showing in the menu. Without any help how to correct the error.

My advise would be to install Wine or WineHQ or Playonlinux from Mint repository. Saves a lot of headaches.

Been here... I tried to install wine from WineHQ years ago and gave up. I've rarely attempted to install non-repository software since. It's a minefield and I'd rather use it than mess about with it. :)  About the only thing I've used WineHQ for since is to look at the compatibility list.

Just installed a version of Wine that seems to work ok on Mint.
Menu -> All Applications -> Management -> Software Manager
and searched for Mint, selected Install, followed the bouncing ball and it did everything.
It works as described in the above posts.
As a result I know nothing about how to configure an existing installation.

Have not installed wine before as it is easier to run windows apps in windows!
