Hi,
I have recently updated my PC to a Win 10 model, and have started installing all my old favourite programs.
I need MMEdit for MMBasic, but can't get the program to install, either the v4 or the v5 versions.

I have Win 10 Home 21H2, with McAfee AV, and am using the Edge browser.

Attempting the download gives the message "MMedit_setup4.x.exe isn't commonly downloaded. Make sure you trust MMedit_setup4.x.exe before you open it.".

I get files called something similar to "Unconfirmed 834031.crdownload" on download. When double clicked, Windows asks me to select what app to run for this file type. ( I am saving the file to the desktop on download.)

It's probably something I'm doing wrong due to ignorance or unfamiliarity with Win 10 - but I'd appreciate some help here!

With thanks, Paul.

When windows FLAGS a file... it stops downloading it until you confirm or discard the download.  If a file is in this "waiting for your OK" status... it will "stall" in your downloading queue... leaving behind "Unconfirmed 834031.crdownload"... which means the file is halted or is currently "downloading"... but not yet completed.

So windows is waiting for you to decide what to do.

Hi pwillard,
Thanks for your reply. I did report the site as a "safe" site to Microsoft, but didn't find out how to continue the download - which I have now discovered, and MMEdit has now installed successfully. (Right -click on the download items list !)

Now to sort out how to get disco4now's #REPLACE feature in place.

Perhaps I am being a bit over-cautious with this new machine.

With regards, Paul.

M<y view FWIW. Get rid of McAfee ASAP (sometimes easier said than done). It is there because they have paid to have it on the PC to try and lock you in to continuing licence fees. It will slow your PC down and cause multiple problems. Windows has a perfectly good anti-virus built in and if you add something like MalWareBytes you are covered.

I agree with Peter I only use the built in Win10 protection and free versiom of MalWarebytes, and no problems in the last couple of years. And yes McAfee can be a pain to get rid of.

Hi Gerry, Peter and palcal,
Thanks for your news and advice.

W.r.t. McAfee I also had a warning from my brother that it might be hard to remove once installed - oh dear! On my old XP machine (!) I used Kasperski AV, but with the Ukraine/Russian situation I did not want to expose my new PC to any likelihood of an update being malicious - regardless of the company's claim to be independent. (I don't believe that is possible in Russia, such is the control it's government blatantly exerts.)

McAfee have been offering me a 50% discount for early renewal - but I'm not going to do that. I was going to let the current license run, then consider my options. I may consider sooner rather than later!

Disco4now - is the #REPLACE code still available for MMEdit_v4x ? I should like to have it for both v4 and v5 MMEdit.

With best regards, Paul.

I found it is the payment that was the problem, if you signed up and gave them a credit card number to auto renew. The easiest way is to cancel the credit card, maybe things have changed I'm going back about 3 years.

Hi palcal,
I can see why that would cause a problem. I dislike those sort of arrangements for the same reason you state - extracting yourself from it.

About 15 years ago my wife once bought some goods over the phone, only to find that the company had then signed her up for a significant monthly subscription charge, plus other "special" deal charges to boot. I had to threaten legal action, and also reported them to the Trading Standards watchdog before they refunded all the debits they took without our permission.

I have let my Kasperski license lapse on my old machine, as it will never be connected to the internet, or be loaded with any code not already screened by an AV. They have given up trying to persuade me to renew now.

With regards, Paul.

Whatever AV program you use, they all have the same problem.
If they don't have the program in their database because it's a new program or new updated version, they are afraid and warn you that they have no idea if it's a problem. It is an indication that the AV programs are not very clever.
They often count that as a positive intervention so their record looks good.

The tool chain I am using (Purebasic) has recently changed and the new system appears to be less likely to cause a positive hit (but still suffers from the "stuffed if I know - never seen it before" issue).
I have also found that the 64 bit version has fewer problems than the 32 bit version even though the source code is identical.

I could chase up all the positive hits with the various AV suppliers but by the time I have wasted a few weeks doing that, I will release an update and have to start over again.
I am not interested in wasting my time doing that.

When you first install V5, you will be asked if you want to allow network access. That is because MMEdit now uses TCPIP to communicate between the two halves of the program as well as having the option to talk to IP connected 'mites.
It does not and will never 'call home'.

As far as I know, Gerry is the only user who makes use of running external programs and I made sure that the ability to do so was retained even though it has meant a re-write of his MMReplace utility.
