Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi Guys

It has been a long time since I have been here. I decided some time ago to take a break from messing with HW as a hobby, and have been focusing on software. As such, my MaxiMites are in a box for the time being.

However, I still miss MMBasic. Could it be possible to use the Windows-version for creating programs and games? Or do I recall correctly that sprites etc. are not supported when using MMBasic on a non-microcontroller unit?

Any advice would be great!

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Check-out MMBasic for Windows (MMB4W) in this thread: https://www.thebackshed.com/forum/ViewTopic.php?FID=16&TID=14614

Make sure you are looking at the thread about the "beta", and not the thread about the "alpha" that was recently accidentally resurrected.

Your recollections are of "MMBasic for DOS", we now have "MMBasic for Windows" which does have hi-res graphics, sprites and sound.

Note that in my personal opinion it may be more accurate to consider "MMBasic for Windows" as "CMM2 simulator for Windows" and that if MMBasic/CMM2/TBS compatibility is not a consideration then there are almost certainly better Windows BASICs (no I don't mean the VB.NET) to consider.

Best wishes,

Tom

Hey Tom

Thanks for the answer!

So, do other Windows BASIC-versions also include the easy to use sprite commands etc.?

Sorry, I'm not a big user of Windows, I don't doubt that some of them do, perhaps ask in this Facebook group: BASIC Programming Language.

My point was really that MMB4W is missing a whole bunch of functionality / integration with Windows that you would want in a general purpose Windows/BASIC programming language. However if you just want to "mess about" with an MMBasic/Colour Maximite 2 compatible environment on a Windows box then it does an admirable job.

Please note that none of this is intended as criticism of MMB4W it's just "matter of fact". Much the same if not "worse" could be said about my own MMB4L (Linux) port which can't even manage hi-res graphics or sound.

Best wishes,

Tom

Since I have earlier used Pico-8, I started looking for alternatives. I found LowRes NX which is like Pico-8, but uses BASIC instead of LUA. A quick glance makes me think that it seems somewhat like MMBasic?

I'll give it a spin. If there are others like that, please let me know. Those lightweight IDE's are great fun - and do not require a panavision-monitor like GMS2 or Godot almost does :)

Thanks!
Nicholas
