If the Pico is powered by usb direct , can i connect an on off switch to one of the pins in order to turn the pico on or off

The same question would appply to an arduino nano

Is it possible?

Will
3V3EN Enable 3.3V regulator (low = off, high = enabled).
do what you want?

On the Arduino Nano there is no on/off pin as such but switching the Reset pin to ground shuts the chip down.

3V3EN is ideal. It is a genuine power on/off switch if you are using the on-board switching supply a it puts it into a low power mode and disables the output. It works upside down, of course. With 3V3EN connected to GND the power is off.

But you must make provisiones that peripherals cannot backpower the rp2040 through io lines.

So I just connect a switch between GND and 3V3EN

As Volhout points out, it's fine if you are powering your external stuff from the PicoMite's 3V3 pin. It will all switch on and off together then. If it's powered from a different supply then it's not quite so straightforward. Apart from that, then yes. :)
