Many moons ago there was a design in one of the UK magazines using, IIRC, digitrons driven by rotary switches and a geared synchronous motor to push them round every minute. The switches had their click stops removed and the shaft had a "star" of rods, one of which was bent to give a "carry" signal to the next digit's switch. Not a normal valve or transistor in it. :) It had a certain electro-mechanical charm but I bet the lifetime wasn't great.
