' scen/engarde.txt - finding 2.2: going over an edge with the sword out.
'
' CTRL.S startfall puts the sword away as the fall begins, and for the player
' it also sets droppedout. The port did neither.
'
' Left drawn, the landing runs softland's crouch and FightCtrl is in charge of
' pose 109, which takes no input: he crouches where he lands until something
' kills him. Retreating off a ledge is the ordinary way out of a fight, so
' this was a soft-lock in the one move you most want. And droppedout is what
' tells the guard the kid has gone over the edge; nothing ever set it, so
' FollowKid never ran and nobody ever came down after him.
'
' Level 1 screen 3 is the guard's room and has no ledge in it, so one is made
' under him once the fight is going: the sword-fight script from the coverage
' pass leaves him en garde at column 4, and that floor is then taken away with
' somewhere put below to land on. How the floor went does not matter - what
' is being tested is what a step-off does to a character with his sword out.

' The sword goes away and droppedout is raised the moment he goes over, so
' that is where those two are read. droppedout is not a flag that keeps: it
' is a message to the guard, and FollowKid clears it once it has been acted
' on - which is why it is not looked at at the end of the longer run below.

' And he comes out of the landing standing, not stuck in softland's crouch
' with FightCtrl in charge of pose 109 and taking no input. The guard comes
' down after him, which is what droppedout is for: his own floor has gone too,
' and hitflr's :softland brings a guard up en garde rather than leaving him
' disarmed where the step-off put his sword away, so he stays in the fight and
' follows. Before, he stood on the lip he had failed to step off for ever.
