Does anyone have a link to or the list of components to make the TL084 charge controller?
Being a newbie to the forum, I scanned through the posts and the website just to make sure I havnt missed it.
On the article page are the schematics, but not a components list!

Im in the UK and have an account with Rapid Online who can supply all I need, if only I knew what that was!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Smoothy,

Think you are being a bit lazy here, as all the information needed is provided.

The basic list is :-
1 x TL-084
1 x 78L08 voltage reg.
1 x 100uf x 35v electo. cap
1 x 10uf x 16v electro. cap
1 x 0.1 cap
2 x 1n4004 power diode
1 x 1n1001 diode
2 x led (red, green or what ever you choose)
1 x BD-139 transistor
2 x 12k 1/4 watt resistor ( all resistors 1/4 watt)
3 x 1k
1 x 10k
1 x 3.3k
1 x 8.2k
1 x 100k
2 x 4.7k
1 x 2.2k
2 x 10k trimpots
1 x relay
1 x terminal strip

Please check the list against the the data given.

Perhaps if Gizmo has nothing better to do??? and felling real nice he might add the list to the page for others that are to lazy to take pen to paper and make a list of what to order.

Pete.

The only change i would make is:-

10U 25V 105 DEG AXIAL ELECTROLYTIC (RC).

100U 25V 105 DEG AXIAL ELECTROLYTIC(RC).

I would use PCB mount and not Axial but both will work as well as each other.

You might want to watch the voltage rating on the 100uf cap depending on your input voltage.
If using 12v then 25v cap should be ok.

Check your list against mine.

Im trying to match what my supplier has against your list, but coming up with a few unavailable items.

1 x 78L08 voltage reg. not available
2.2k 1/4 watt resistor not in stock

As for the capacitors, I could change those to

10UF 16V 4X5.4MM 20%85C SMD ELECTROLY RC
100UF 16V 6.3X5.4MM 20% 85C SMD ELEC RC

Is there an alternatives for the 78L08?
I am unsure as to its handling capabilities.

Smd components are a right bugger to work, with so would not go that way and go back to the axial caps.

As for the voltage regulator there is no reason you cant use a standard LM-7808 v-reg that should be a standard item, Juat need to check the pinouts to see if they are the same order when wiring the circuit.

If you can not get the LM-7808 then check for a LM-317 v-reg as it is a adjustable v-reg and with a few extra components be used for the same job.

The resistors you can make up with resistors in series ( in line ) like 1k + 1.2k or 2 x 1K + 220R or what ever values add up close to 2.2K.

Thanks for all your help Pete,
I can get an LM-317 just need to figure out adjustment for 12v!!
Ill go back to the axial caps on your instruction!!!
Anything for an easy life!!

If you have trouble working out the 317 setup i will post a basic circuit but should you wish to place an order you should be safe with an added
1 x 0.1uf cap
1 x 10uf electro cap
1 x 1 uf electro/tantalum cap
2 x 1n4004 diode
1 x 120ohm resistor 1/4
1 x 1k trimpot

1 x LM-317 v-reg
1 x 78L08 voltage reg. not available
The 78L08 (100mA version, in TO-92 case) can be replaced by a more common 7808 (1A version, in TO-220 case). This is exactly what Glenn/Gizmo did in his prototype too. Just be careful you don't mount them in reverse, which is something I always have to pay attention to for the 78Lxx regulators.

I'd be very surprized if your electronics supplier can't supply a 7808.

1/4W resistors can be replaced by ones with a higher power rating (say, 1/2W), as long as you have physical space for them on the board.

Peter.

Edit - oops, just noticed Downwind just mentioned the same about the 7808. Try finding that one first before you start messing around with other regulators which require circuit modifications.Edited by Dinges 2010-01-14

Think there was 2 x 1n4004 diodes (1 across the relay)also 2 x 10k trimpots.
I would also get a 14 pin ic socket and a spare TL084.
I dont see any led's on the list there should be 2.
What about the relay??

For some strang reason, the relay was ommited from the list but its definately on the order list!!
The list above does include 2 x 1n4004 diodes and 2 trimpots (column was ommited when posting!!)
I have a vast stock of LED's so not needed for ordering but I have added an extra TL084 on your recommendation.
Other than that, It should be ready to order, unless you can think of anything else!!!
Thanks for your assistance Pete. Hopefully, all going well, I'll construt another controller after this on for another turbine. I need 2 for seperate circuits.
Bieng a novice, im looking forward to tackling the controller, I just hope I can follow the schematic!!!!
Also Im a tad concerned that I may mount them in reverse as Dinges said!!!

Dont forget the ic sockets or if you kill a chip you will need to unsolder 14 pins and some bad words might be mutter about then.
If you are unsure about the construction just ask, as i dont mind helping people that are prepared to have a go.

A good place to find data sheets on components that i use is.........

http://www.datasheetcatalog.com/

Its free and they have almost any component.
Just leave out any dashes in the product code and type the code all in one word with no spaces.

Have you worked with stripboard before?
As i could offer a few tips, but we all have our own adapted way of doing things.

If you like electronics you should have a look at the topic "picaxe for old dogs" i started, and consider ordering a picaxe 08m chip as well, and puting a test board together out of the left over strip board and have some fun with programming a microprocessor.

The board dont need to be to extent i designed it and can be just 08m chip with resistors and leds, as you have the leds and now 100 resistors. Will need a few other bits like a 9 pin D socket etc.
Think you would have some fun with it.

Good luck and i want to see some photos of your project and an update on progress along the way.
They are the things that make this 4m interesting for all.

Thanks for the encouragement Pete.
Im fairly competent with soldering but this is my first stripboard attempt so any advice would be great!
I did look through your Picaxe post, but some of it went over my head so I may leave tackling that till im a bit more confident with my work!!
I know I'm probably jumping in with both feet here, but Id rather screw up and learn the hard way than buy an off the shelf product and learn nothing!
In reality, this is probably the smallest job that I need to tackle.
Im in the process of renovating my ship and am aiming to be totally green in terms of power consumption and heating.
I have loads of projects that I'm looking to take on, so I'll probably be asking loads of questions in my attempt to further my knowledge.
Hopefully I wont become a burden!

If you look at the Veroboard layout (stripboard) that Gizmo done it is very simple to follow.
I dont know if you realize that the white squares shown (5 of them) are cuts in the tracks.
You can use a craft knife to do this or an old favorite of mine is a new sharp drill bit about twice the size of the tracks and just turn it by hand between your fingers and drill off the copper track only, at a hole.
It is quick and neat.

Just watch the electro caps are placed in around the right way along with the diodes, vreg, transistor and ic chip, the rest dont matter which way around they go.

Thanks Pete. I did notice the white patches, but thought it was to highlight components!!!
I'm ordering all components today so they should be here by Monday (weather permitting)
Its like Siberia here at present. The tide came in this morning and froze!!!!
