Only when one has shuffled off this mortal coil, and if it's to a post-mortal coil, that curve might be a learning one as well.

When you re-incarnate, what future period in time will you select to come back to?

B

If I get to choose, I might want to bide my time and see. I don't like winter anyway, so a time of nuclear winter sounds particularly unpleasant. But from what I understand, you don't get to choose +what+ you come back as. If I'm an ant or a worm, I'm not sure that I could do more than hope that I was the best ant, or best worm that I could be, in whatever circumstance I was born into.

lizby, Brian uncle Tom Cobly and all.

Just by coincidence Grogster's board bubbled to the top of the Forum so I have asked if I can have a couple. So many new toys available. What next?
On the subject of what to come back as, I have decided to come back as a smart phone.
At lunch recently the young lady on the next table decided to clean her screen by polishing it on her left breast.
As to what period, about a micro second after I leave.

I polish mine by rubbing it on my right, uh, breast (since the left has a pocket containing necessaries), so that reincarnation might not offer all that you have hoped for.

lizby.

You can't stop me from dreaming.
I am getting quite excited about owning a RPI ZERO W and Grogster's board.
Now if Grogster's board had the I2C ADC installed ..................

Quazee

Thanks for that but I must not get too far ahead of myself.
I'm looking forward to installing MMBASIC into this PI thing and looking at the display on Nancye's 7in truck display.
I know how to install sauce into a pie but MMNASIC into a PI is probably a different thing all together.
Problems are meant to be solved.

Here is RPI-ZW output from MMBasic to my ancient 15" vga monitor using this HDMI to VGA converter:

The picture doesn't do justice to the clarity of the display. (I needed a mini-hdmi to full-sized hdmi cable to connect the converter to the RPI.)

Here's the hdmi->vga output to the 15" monitor running matherp's spirograph program.

And after it had run for a few minutes.

See this thread.
I used "a=600: b=340: p=80" and, when prompted, inc = 4.

mm.hres is 1280, mm.vres is 1024.

Lizby, Good morning / evening

Have you tried the AV output from the RPI ZERO W? It has one I think.
That is what I am aiming for. RPI to truck type display.

I could easily be wrong, but I don't see that MMBasic for the Pi has an OPTION LCDPANEL which uses the AV output.

I think I saw that someone (Quazee?) was using AV output from the Pi, but I didn't think it was from MMBasic.

Happy to shown wrong in this belief, and if I am, I'll test it since the Polaroid monitor has AV inputs.

Quazee has used the AV output to drive a 5in "truck" type display but not using MMBASIC.
My knowledge of the PI is -ZERO but would I need OPTION LCDPANEL for AV output. I hope not.
I am impressed with the number of times this thread has been read. Does that mean there is a need for a DUMB DISPLAY with AV input?
Thanks for your interest.

I have a HDMI to VGA converter that cost ~$6 to run an old projector of my laptop
and a VGA to HDMI converter that cost ~$8 to run Maximites on my TV.
The VGA to HDMI also has audio input.

The latter needs external 5V

You CAN have your Pi and eat it too.

Raspberry Pi (up to Model 3B+)
For AV output you may want to try this:

Edit config.txt in the /boot folder (FAT partition of your SD card)
to swap output to AV.

Doco here:
config.txt

Pay attention to:
   hdmi_group
   hdmi_mode
and possibly
   sdtv_mode

Now set MMBasic to use HDMI output
I have not actually tried this with MMBasic, but it should work!

Thanks led

I hope lizby and quazee are following this because as sure as hell it's going right over my head.
But I am very eager to get my PI and fire it up.

Jim

My effort with a VGA2AV was not good.

I have just played with raspberry pi (model 1B)
with Buster OS Lite and Buster version of mmbasic.

You do NOT need to edit config.txt to get composite video
out of the AV pin. I set option lcdpanel to HDMI and had
graphics on a TV screen ok.

In config.txt sdtv_mode=0 (NTSC default) shows ok on my digital TV
sdtv_mode=2 (PAL) also works ok.
Ctl-Z did not exit out of mmbasic ??? It did with Buster Full windows OS.

Stick with Lite version of Buster OS (or Lite version of Stretch).

Buster    Stretch     ?????????
Perhaps one day I will understand

The point is, IT WORKS!

Is it good enough to use as a DUMB DISPLAY for messages etc. ?

Thanks for your effort

While I get a good display from the hdmi to VGA conversion, when I try AV (TV on the rpi-zw), I get snow with the monitor switched to "TV" and "No Input Signal" when switched to "Video". Back to "D-Sub" and all is good. Same spirograph2.bas program running all the time.

I'm running stretch lite, and have cobbled together the connection: TV+ (on the rpi) to dupont cable to alligator clip to center of yellow RCA connector (to RCA video input on the monitor), and other pin on the rpi to dupont cable to alligator clip to rim of yellow RCA connector.

I made no changes to config.txt since the default seemed to imply NTSC out on AV in conjunction with HDMI.

Am I doing something wrong? Is Buster needed?

I think you left out the bit of wet string in your connections.

Other than that, I hope you and led have it sorted by the time my PIs (yes I have ordered two) arrive.

Sorry for delay, had to solder some pins on the pi Zero and make a
video AV cable, and all works fine on my digital TV!
I am running Stretch Full on the pi zero. Should be no different
for Buster, although for mmbasic the Lite version is preferred.

One thing you must make sure of the connection to the Pi.  The 2 pin header
labelled TV - the square pin is the Video out!! Took me a while to wake up
(RTFM anyone?).

Set display out:   option lcdpanel hdmi
No changes to config.txt gives NTSC output on composite video
sdtv_mode=2 (remove the # at start of line) outputs PAL
That's it .. over and out

Since my interest in the AV aspect was only with regard to proof-of-concept, and led-bloon has provided that, I don't plan to pursue further why mine didn't work. But I may have a use for the HDMI-to-VGA link on this old monitor.
